Chimp Tracking or the Habituation Experience in Kibale?

One hour with the chimps, or a day following them from nest to nest.

Chimp tracking or the habituation experience in Kibale? Both take you into the forest to find wild chimpanzees. The difference is time: an hour with a fully habituated community, or most of a day following chimps from the moment they leave their night nests.

Why Kibale

Kibale National Park, near Fort Portal in western Uganda, has some of the most reliable chimpanzee tracking in Africa. The community tracked from Kanyanchu is well used to people, and most groups find it. The forest also holds 12 other primate species, from red colobus to grey-cheeked mangabey.

Standard chimpanzee tracking

Groups leave Kanyanchu in the morning or afternoon with a ranger. You walk on forest trails, guided by calls and by the trackers' knowledge of which trees are fruiting, until you find the chimps. Then you have an hour to watch them feed, groom, argue and move through the canopy.

It suits most travellers: the walk is usually on fairly level ground, and the timing leaves the rest of the day free for the Bigodi wetland walk or the drive to Queen Elizabeth.

The habituation experience

The chimpanzee habituation experience starts before dawn. You join researchers and trackers to find a community at its nests and stay with it through the day, watching how the chimps wake, feed, travel and rest. Groups are very small and the experience is far more immersive.

It costs more than a standard permit, it is a long day on foot, and places are limited, so it needs booking early.

Which to choose

  • Choose standard tracking if chimps are one highlight among many on your trip, or if you want a shorter, easier outing.
  • Choose the habituation experience if you are passionate about primates or photography and are happy to spend a full day in the forest.

Tips for the day

  • Wear long trousers tucked into socks, closed walking shoes and a long-sleeved shirt.
  • Chimps move fast and often high in the canopy, so binoculars help.
  • The minimum age is 12.
  • Stay with your ranger and keep the recommended distance.

Our 5-day Chimpanzees & Tree-Climbing Lions safari includes standard tracking, and we can switch it to the habituation experience on request.

Other places to see chimpanzees

Kibale is the most reliable, but not the only option. In Uganda, Budongo Forest near Murchison Falls has chimpanzee tracking at Kaniyo Pabidi, and Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth has a small community in a dramatic setting, though sightings there are less predictable. In Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest offers chimpanzee tracking alongside its canopy walkway.

A tracking morning

A typical morning starts with a briefing at Kanyanchu, where rangers explain the rules and split visitors into small groups. You set off on forest trails, stopping to listen. Chimps are noisy, and their pant-hoots and drumming on tree buttresses often give away their position long before you see them.

When you find the community, the ranger starts the hour. Chimps may be feeding high in a fig tree, grooming on the forest floor or moving fast between trees, so be ready to follow. Afterwards, the walk back is usually shorter, and you are at your lodge for lunch.
