Permit Strategies & Insider Tips

📅

Book 3–6 Months Ahead

Uganda and Rwanda gorilla permits sell out months in advance, especially for peak season. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) limits 8 people per gorilla group per day.

🏴

Uganda vs Rwanda: The Choice

Uganda is significantly cheaper ($800 vs $1,500 USD per permit) and offers more habituated gorilla groups. Rwanda offers closer lodges to the park and slightly easier terrain.

🦍

Habituation Experience

Uganda offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga — spend up to 4 hours with a group being habituated (vs 1 hour standard). Book early; very limited slots.

📸

Photography Conditions

Morning light in the forest is soft and ideal. Bring a camera with fast lens (f/2.8) — forest canopy is dark. Rain jacket essential; mud is certain in the wet months.

Safari Planning

Choosing the Perfect Luxury Camp

Minimum 3 nights per camp

Anything less and you barely settle in. 3–4 nights per destination is ideal for genuine wilderness immersion.

Choose fly-in safaris

Bush flights reduce road travel and maximise game time. Critical in Botswana and Zambia where distances are vast.

Private conservancy advantage

Private conservancies adjacent to national parks (e.g., Olare Motorogi, Sabi Sands) allow off-road driving and night drives. Fewer vehicles, truly exclusive.

Request private vehicle & guide

Sharing a vehicle with strangers limits your game drive pace. A private vehicle costs more but transforms the experience entirely.

Pack light for bush flights

Light aircraft weight limits are real — typically 15–20 kg in a soft bag. Luggage storage at your gateway lodge is standard.

Vaccinations & malaria advice

Yellow fever certificate required for Uganda, Rwanda, many East Africa destinations. Consult a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before departure.
